Kids, We have to eat rocks for Dinner!

Feeding my abundance of kids was not always an easy task. With the cost of daycare, a house, etc, I often had to use my imagination to come up with new and creative ways to keep tummies full. “Cowboy Soup”, Eggs, Hard Bread and Macaroni, “Holes in One”, were some of our favorites. I remember a time when no one was allowed a “whole” piece of gum. I am confident, though, if you were to ask any of the six, they would never remember a time when they were afraid that mama wouldn’t have something for them to eat.
I remember a time when I was ornery, however, with those little trusting minds. After work, I took little David, Tyler, Taylor and Andrew out to sit us all in a circle in my gravel driveway. All of them being probably younger than 7. (Note: Taylor is my youngest son. Andrew is my oldest grandson. They are 18 days apart in age.  Andrew is not in this picture to the right. I'll share him tomorrow)

With all of us sitting cross legged in a circle, all 8 eyes were focused on mine, quietly in anticipation of what I was going to say.

“I'm sorry sweeties, tonight we are going to have to eat rocks for dinner.” (I had chocolate rocks in my pocket which looked as realistic as those we were sitting on) I put one in my mouth and chewed. I then passed out the rocks to those little, precious boys waiting for them to mimic me, which they did.

They looked confused with the wonderful flavor of our bounty.  I came clean shortly after passing out our dinner. This is a vivid memory for all of them and one that still makes me smile.  I learned early on to never worry about tomorrow for my Lord would always provide for our needs.

"Consider the ravens; They do not sow or reap, they have no storeroom or barn; yet God feeds them." Luke 12:22
