Although I’m not quite as fast as I used to be, I typically fly through the office in a rush. When I am running from desk to desk dropping off reports, being stopped in mid-stream from someone that needs help with an angry customer, phone ringing, printer needing paper, meeting reminders popping-up, a line at my door… I barely am hanging onto sanity at any given moment in my workday.
One particularly busy day, people were trying to get a second or two of my time so they kept pace with me as I flitted throughout the office. They were keeping up with me and we were getting some things taken care of during our flight ---- UNTIL ---- the staff stood still with their mouths wide open gawking at what I was about to do. The sudden quietness made me become aware of what exactly the circle of staff members were staring at.
There I was, having ripped the corner of the cardboard lid from my microwavable lunch, holding the Canon copier machine’s lid up in the air, with my other hand setting the frozen meal down on the glass of the copier machine – and just as I was about to push the start button, the sudden quietness pulled me back into reality much like cold water to my face. I realized that I had been caught “Pulling a Patti”.
I have to remind myself to slow down at times, especially when I'm "off the clock". Slow down and play, enjoy a sunrise or a sunset, swing in the park with your grandbaby on your lap, take off your shoes and wade in the pond, walk a nature trail alone and ponder the majesty of the creation thatsurrounds you. Only then will you get your sanity back, priorities in order and a perspective on just how insignificant the world's demands are when you are taking the time to rejuvenate yourself with the Lord's workplace.
